What is Telescopic Mast?
A telescoping mast is a structure made of multiple tubular sections that slide inside each other, just like a telescope.
It can be extended vertically to raise devices such as:
Cameras / CCTV
Antennas / Radios
Weather sensors
Lighting or surveillance equipment
When not in use, the mast collapses down to a compact size for transport or storage.
The Cable Challenge
When you have electrical cables (for power, data, video, CCTV or surveliance) running up the mast, the main challenges are:
The mast height changes continuously and so the cables must move with it smoothly.
You do not want to have slack cables hanging or tangling between sections.
Cable Coil Solution
To solve this, cable coils (also called spiral cables, coiled cords, or retractable cables) are used:
These are cables that are pre-formed into a spiral/helix shape, just like a telephone cord.
When the mast extends, the coil stretches out from its sitting position.
When the mast collapses, the coil contracts back neatly resting on its seat.
How the cable Works in a Telescoping Mast
The coiled section is attached at two points, usually: One end is fixed to the base of the mast while the other connected to the moving upper section. As the mast extends, the coil unwinds gradually. As it retracts, the coil rewinds, maintaining cable tension and preventing snags. This ensures safe cable management with no external reels or drag chains needed.
Typical Cables Used
Depending on the application, the retractable cables are used as:
Power cables (for lights, cameras, etc.)
Signal/data cables (Ethernet, coax, fiber hybrid)
Pneumatic tubes (for air-operated systems)
Combination cables (multi-core with shielding)
These coiled cables are often made from flexible polyurethane (PU) or Polyamide (Nylon) or TPE thermoplastic material to withstand repeated stretching and outdoor exposure.
Advantages: Mast Spiral Cable
Spiral cable has unlimited advantages over convential straight cable:
Compact and self-managing cable length
No tangling or abrasion
Easy to integrate with mast design
Durable in outdoor, mobile, or military setups
Works for both manual and motorized masts
Design Considerations: Mast Coil Cable
When ordering or selecting a coil cable, look for:
Extended length: Must match full mast extension
Rest length: Should not interfere when mast is retracted
Coil diameter: Should clear mast structure
Cable type: Must handle repeated flex cycles
Temperature & UV resistance: For outdoor use
Types of Telescopic Mast And Its Advantages
There are primarily three types of telescopic masts available in the market, each designed for specific operational needs:
Manual Telescopic Mast: Operated by hand, ideal for lightweight applications and quick deployment.
Hydraulic Telescopic Mast Uses hydraulic power for smooth and effortless elevation of heavier loads.
Pneumatic Telescopic Mast Powered by compressed air, commonly used for high-precision and rapid extension requirements.Whether you need a manual telescopic mast for portable communication setups or a hydraulic/pneumatic mast for industrial and defense applications, the range ensures stability, reliability, and superior performance in all conditions.
